Mosquito Bay
Sept 15, 2010
So now that all the parties are over, a large group of us plan a night trip to Mosquito Bay. What a bad name for a tourist attraction. Mosquito Bay is most spectacular Bio-luminescent Bays in the world. This unique bay contains up to 720,000 single-celled bio-luminescent dinoflagellates per gallon of water. These half-plant, half-animal organisms emit a flash of bluish light when agitated at night.
We arrive at about 9pm. It’s pitch dark and a new moon. We had to get off our cushy air conditioned vans and cram into the tours beat up and damp vans. I quickly understood why the hotel didn’t want to drive their vans down the narrow and very bump dirt roads. It took about 20 mins to reach Mosquito Bay and we quickly got our gear and jumped onto our 2 man kayak. Taayla and I started to paddle to the middle of the bay. It was amazing!!! Anything that touched the water glowed. Our paddles, the kayak as it cut through the water and fishes that darted underneath the water. About 20 kayak met in the middle of the bay and our tour guides tied them together. We got the safety speech and info about the bay. A question was asked about sharks and the answer was, “Yes, there’s sharks everywhere in Caribbean waters.” I told them not to worry because if you see something big and glowing coming at them, get out of the water. Shouldn’t be hard to spot. Most of us jumped into the water and swam around. The water was warm. It was an amazing experience. Everything that moved in to the water glowed. I made snow/water angels. We swam from about an hour and headed back. I wish I could have taken my camera but I was told the picture would not develop well and that my camera will get wet.
The next couple days we relax at the W Hotel Resort. Nothing to crazy, just some nice dinners with my parents. By now most of the wedding guests have left, so the resort is a lot quieter. I tried to call a guy I meet on the island to go spear fishing but no luck. On our last day at Vieques it pours down hard, all day. We spend most of the day sitting/napping outside on the covered pouch on these comfortable daybeds/couch. It was nice to spend time with my parents and play Connect 4. I was Connect 4 champ!!!
